Play! This sense has been present in my life since kindergarten till now, and I love it! I know through personal experience that play does increase your ability to concentrate and communicate socially and be happy in general. I also know that if I do not play and just focus on the seriousness of life, I feel like my brain is going to explode. I feel like it is a necessary thing for our brains to function that we take play breaks, because it seems as if our brains distract themselves when they feel overwhelmed. When I am doing the same type of homework for a long period of time, my brain starts distracting itself and thinking about other things (or at least that is what is seems like is happening). I also have found in my life that if I do not enjoy something I do not want to do very well in it but I push myself to because I have to get the grade to keep people happy and me.
Laughter club! That sounds like a great idea and I have never heard of it before. The first thought that came to my mind was that they must be pretty great because they are early in the morning and not many people would get up in the morning for something they did not enjoy. I do find it quite sad though that we have to have clubs in order to laugh, we have to have a reason for why we are laughing we cant just stand out in the middle of the street and start to laugh otherwise people will think that we are crazy.
I find it hard to incorporate play into the actual business community because if employees or bosses play it can cause distraction and a fall in productivity (find article) I think that the only way that play can be incorporated is through fun breaks and laughter meetings in the mornings. It disappoints me that we get in trouble for playing in school, "no you are not supposed to do that, we are in class and this is how you should do this, not that way, but my way" I find it hard to make things more fun and like a game when the teachers require students to do things a certain way, this does not often occur in high school but it is all over in elementary and middle schools. But maybe this is because the kid’s need the guidance and instruction until they can fend for themselves in the world of ideas. But I do feel that kids in middle school are very well capable of this and should be allowed to come up with ideas for themselves.
I think that it is sad the number of hours that an average person spends in front of a computer screen, but it is like surviving in the world today requires it and if you are not willing to work on the computer you wont be employed. I am very sad that the beauty of nature is not treasured as much as it should be anymore. People neglect it through staying inside, polluting, and avoiding it. I love just going outside and sitting listening to the rain or standing is the snowfall. There is no other simple pleasure like this and nothing that is produced by man and is inside a building can give you the same fulfillment.
On page 192 Pink states that the video game industry is larger than the motion picture industry. I think that this is very believable in that you can do video games in the comfort of your own home and do not cost as much as going to the movies. It is that nature of our society today to be lazy enough to where we will try our hardest to do the least we can to get the same results. Pink also stated on Page 193 that learning is not about memorizing isolated facts. It's about connecting and manipulating them. This reminded me of my English class because she teaches us to connect things between all classes instead of just memorizing the isolated facts. I thought that it was really cool reading something so familiar.
One thing that confuses me is how can employees play at work and it increase production when they are playing instead of working, because I know that once you get started playing those games, it is hard to stop. You keep telling yourself, oh just one more level, over and over again. Then it ends up being closing time and you have not gotten anything do. I do not call that being more productive at all. Pink also brings up a point that video games offer practice for real life social situations, but isn't it better just to practice in real life. As he said before, computers cannot simulate real human emotion so it truly is not preparing you for life. The only way to do that, in my opinion, is to get out there and talk with real people in real life.
It really reminded me of Fahrenheit 451 when Pink stated that games are the new books of the 21st century because in that book all of the books were gone and technology basically replaced all of the books. I really hope that this does not happen and we still treasure books in the future, the true source of knowledge.
